TD's Official NFL Picks - Week 5

Howdy y'all. Just wanted to let you know that I won't be posting tomorrow for obvious reasons. Well, obvious for some. So I'll catch you up on Friday...

Okay, gotta concentrate. No Sex in the City this week. Just plain old hard-nosed team picking. At this point, I can't do too much worse than I did last week. Nonetheless, I think I'm gonna be a bit more conservative and try not to choose the upsets. It's better off that way if I want my beer at the end of the year.

Some interesting happenings this week. Two coaches gone. The first Linehan in St. Louis. Methinks, maybe, they should just relocate the Rams back to Los Angeles for the year just to see if that helps. Better yet, maybe they could just move to Cleveland; there's no other team in Ohio showing much life at the moment. And then there's Kiffin. To be honest, I don't think Al Davis is gonna find anyone who can lead his team. He might as well just put the headset on and coach himself either until he drops or until someone in their right mind has him committed.

In other news, the NFC East is officially as good as a whole as the NFC West is bad. I think I'll bet on Brett the Jet. Baltimore's blowing 'em out. No, Pittsburgh's winning. No Baltimore's winning. No, Pittsburgh is. Weird game.

Name the two 4-0 teams. Indy and New England? Nope. Dallas and San Diego? Nope. Pittsburgh and the G-Men? Wrong again. Buffalo and Tennessee. Huh?

Okay, the season's a shave and a haircut over... for some teams. Now it's time for my two bits...

Kansas City V. Carolina
Kansas City woke up against the surging Broncos. Or the Broncos looked past the Chiefs. I think the former. Carolina's not looking past. Again, they're my dark horse; I have faith. That and they have a pretty formidable running and passing attack. With Delhomme seeming as though he's never even heard of Tommy John let alone had his surgery. TD chooses: Carolina Panthers

Chicago V. Detroit
Could it be a trap game for Chicago? Yeah, it could be. But Da Bears look scrappy this year, as if they're treating every game like a dogfight. Detroit? Good move getting rid of Millen. I mean, it's so atrociously late that it borders on being never, but they eked the decision in before the end of the world. Still, you can't turn everything around in a year. TD chooses: Chicago Bears

Atlanta V. Green Bay
Last week, Atlanta just plain got beat by a better team. I'm impressed with how far they've come since the Vick scandal, but again you can't turn everything around in a year. Green Bay. Well, Rodgers finally had his day of interceptions. I think he'll have watched the tape enough this past week to hammer it into his head what NOT to do. TD chooses: Green Bay Packers

San Diego V. Miami
Miami has already slain one good team. Can they do it again? Yes. Will San Diego be the next victim? I don't think so. Although the Bolts got a reprieve with Denver's loss, I don't think they'll sit on their laurels. They'll get after Pennington on D. And they'll open up the offense. But if the Bolts let up, they're gonna rue the day they underestimated the water mammals. TD chooses: San Diego Chargers

Seattle V. New York
Seattle's getting healthy. Their bye week came at the right time. Although Hasselback won't be completely synched with the likes of Branch and Engram, the Giants DBs better be ready. They will be. The Giants are playing with fire. Yes, it was too damn close against the Bagels. But like Dr. Z of SI said in one article, a team is as good as its weakest game. And if the Jints can win at their weakest, then they can win anytime. TD chooses: New York Football Giants

Tennessee V. Baltimore
Good, good game. Baltimore fought tooth and nail last Monday night. They are a good team, I have no doubt. But then there's Tennessee. 4-0 for the first time in franchise history. Can you believe that? FRANCHISE history. That includes all those years in Houston as the Oilers too. Never 4-0. I hereby call this the intriguing game of the week. I choose my pick is based on homefield advantage. TD chooses: Baltimore Ravens

Indianapolis V. Houston
Take the 'd'. Replace with 'jur'. Indy. Injury. A bye week came at a good time for them too. Good defense. Struggling offense. Not much more to say. Houston is the little engine that couldn't. And still can't. Plus Indy's playing away from home which seems a good thing for them. TD chooses: Indianapolis Colts

Tampa Bay V. Denver
I like Tampa. No superstars per se, though a few potentials in their up and coming offense. Then there's the defense. Scored me 18 points in FFL last week. I like that. But it's Denver. Pissed about being the first team to lose to a Missouri team this season. In Denver at Mi(nvesco)le Hi(nvesco)gh. Broncos have homefield. It'll be close, but Denver in Denver is tough. TD chooses: Denver Broncos

Buffalo V. Arizona
Buffalo has to lose at some point, right? Right? There's no Kelly, Thomas, Smith, or Reed. No, there's Green, Lynch, Greer, and Evans. They're impressive. A good team. With Boldin out, Breaston could step up and be just as dangerous. But there's such a thing as Defense, something that Arizona didn't exactly have last week giving up 56 points. TD chooses: Buffalo Bills

New England V. San Francisco
If you think Belichick is going to allow lightning to strike twice you're crazy. Absolutely insane. San Fran is showing some spunk, and I think they'll even make a game of it. But New England isn't as bad as that Miami game might have seemed to indicate. TD chooses: New England Patriots

Cincinnati V. Dallas
Dallas ain't gonna 'llow another team, never mind a bunch 'a bagels, dance on thems star. 'Nuff said. TD chooses: Dallas Cowboys

Minnesota V. New Orleans
I'm disappointed in Minnesota. I didn't think they'd be 1-3. What's their problem? I'll posit that it's not exactly their play. It's something else, something that affects their play. It's player leadership. I think they have a good coach; I think they have talent. But they have no mean sumbitch to stand up and say 'We're the @#$%ing Purple People Eaters! Let's go smash their faces in.' New Orleans, meanwhile, has some offensive weapons that will put them on top in this game, but not by much. TD chooses: New Orleans Saints

Picks of the Week
I can't help it. There are two exciting games this weekend.

Pittsburgh V. Jacksonville
A good rivalry. Pittsburgh, as banged up as they get, seem to find some way to win. They scratch and claw until they take home that victory. Then there's Jacksonville. Also plagued by injuries. Good running game. Still looking for a superior passing game. Strong defense. Wow. Who to choose. I say Mewelde doesn't open up the passing game for Big Ben and the Steelers offense sputters. TD chooses: Jacksonville Jaguars

Washington V. Philadelphia
I'll be honest. Every NFC matchup - after last week's Washington win in Dallas - becomes a game of the week. Washington looked like a rock last week. Philly has looked like a proverbial hard place against Pittsburgh and against Chicago in last week's second half. Washington has the momentum. Philly has homefield. No idea on this one. It's a tossup. TD chooses: Philadelphia Eagles
