Sporting Rants & Raves: December 26, 2009

Happy 55th Birthday to Mr. Osborne Earl Smith, better known to the baseball world as Ozzie. "The Wizard" played 18 years in MLB, first for San Diego and later, more famously, for the St. Louis Cardinals. He earned his way into the Hall of Fame on his first ballot in 2002.

Trivia of the Week
What did Harry Frazee do 90 years ago today?

Answers to December 19's Trivia of the Week
Jake Plummer received his nickname from this wrestler. Jake "The Snake" Roberts
Extra Credit: The wrestler with the nickname took the nickname from this NFL player. Ken Stabler

Answers to December 19's Trivia of the Week 2
Bobby Layne won three NFL championships for this team during the 1950s. Detroit Lions
Extra Credit: Name the only 3 teams to have been playing in the NFL since 1970 that have NOT been in a Super Bowl. Detroit Lions, Cleveland Browns, New Orleans Saints

TD's NFL Picks - Week 16
Yes, forgot again. Such is life. It was Christmas, and I didn't want to be on the computer. So, I lost the San Diego / Tennessee game. I would have chosen San Diego had I chosen. Back in August, I chose Tennessee. Now, for the rest of them. An interesting web woven in the AFC...

Buffalo @ Atlanta
This game has no affect on this year's playoffs. They'll just play to see who wins. August choice: Atlanta Falcons. Present choice: Atlanta Falcons

Kansas City @ Cincinnati
As strange as it sounds, there is still a VERY low chance that the Bengals don't make it. I don't think they have to worry much given who they're playing. August choice: Cincinnati Bengals. Present choice: Cincinnati Bengals

Oakland @ Cleveland
Both have shown hints of positivity in these waning days of the decade. Too little, too late. August choice: Cleveland Browns. Present choice: Oakland Raiders

Green Bay @ Seattle
I think the Seachickens are really that bad. I know one year is usually too short a time to call on the general management to rid themselves of the head coach. But in this instance, I'll make an exception. Add to this the fact that Green Bay is still working to secure a playoff spot, and you have a Packer win. August choice: Green Bay Packers. Present choice: Green Bay Packers

Houston @ Miami
Both teams fight for their respective playoff lives. Not to mention, I think they're rather evenly matched. In fact, this might be one of the better games tomorrow. August choice: Miami Dolphins. Present choice: Miami Dolphins

Carolina @ New York Football Giants
Carolina would scare me if they had a better QB at the helm. But I'm betting the Giants are playing to get into the playoffs. Too little too late for the Jints too? Perhaps... I do like, however, that they're not giving up. August choice: Carolina Panthers. Present choice: New York Football Giants

Jacksonville @ New England
It's hard for me to fathom that after some of the 'dogs' the jaguars have played, they still have a chance to get into the playoffs. Not a good chance, mind you, but a chance nonetheless. But this Florida team must go into New England to do it. And New England is still trying to secure their own playoff destiny. Sorry, JAX. August choice: New England Patriots. Present choice: New England Patriots

Tampa Bay @ New Orleans
The Saints are fallible. But not that fallible. August choice: Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Present choice: New Orleans Saints.

Denver @ Philadelphia
A fascinating game. No idea which Denver will show. They're still playing for the playoffs, after all. As for Philly, they have an outside chance of getting a first round bye. And everyone who thought the 13-3 record I awarded Philly at the beginning of the year thought I was crazy. August choice: Philadelphia Eagles. Present choice: Philadelphia Eagles

Baltimore @ Pittsburgh
Another battle royale anyone? Playoffs will be determined by this game. Pittsburgh holds on for dear life. Baltimore tries to blow the race open and get the Wild Card. And they have to go into Pittsburgh to do it. August choice: Pittsburgh Steelers. Present choice: Pittsburgh Steelers

St. Louis @ Arizona
Eh. NFC West. No one cares. I'm not even sure if Arizona can get hot like they did last year. Still, St. Louis shouldn't be much of a challenge. August choice: Arizona Cardinals. Present choice: Arizona Cardinals

Detroit @ San Francisco
Well, apart from San Francisco being a tad better than I expected, this game has exactly the meaning I thought it would have at the beginning of the season, i.e. it makes a difference on draft day. August choice: San Francisco 49ers. Present choice: San Francisco 49ers

New York Jets @ Indianapolis
Does Indy have anything for which to play? No, not really. Unless you count 15-0 as an aspiration. Or 23 straight. The Jets, meanwhile, can still get a playoff spot. Problem, is I think the J-E-T-S are going to be watching from their H-O-M-E-S come playoff time. August choice: Indianapolis Colts. Present choice: Indianapolis Colts

Dallas @ Washington
After last week's debacle, I can't imagine Washington even putting up a fight. But this is a Cowboys-Redskins game, and anything can happen. And usually does. August choice: Washington Redskins. Present choice: Dallas Cowboys

Minnesota @ Chicago
I won't side with the pundits and say that the Vikings are in trouble. What I will say is that most teams that reach the Super Bowl nowadays are getting hot around this time. See the Cardinals, Giants, and Steelers in the past few big games. I don't see Minnesota getting hot. Yeah, it's possible, but they best watch out for the likes of - dare I say it - Green Bay or Dallas. August choice: Chicago Bears. Present choice: Minnesota Vikings

There you have it. Second to last week. Most of those 7-7 AFC teams will know their fate come Sunday evening. Until next I write, happy sporting...

Sporting Rants & Raves: December 19, 2009

Happy 35th birthday both to Mr. Jake Plummer, an NFL quarterback, and Joe Jurevicius, an NFL wide receiver. Plummer played for both the Arizona Cardinals and the Denver Broncos. Jurevicius played for the New York Football Giants, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Seattle Seahawks, and the Cleveland Browns during his 10-year career.

Today also saw the birth of Mr. Reggie White, the incredible defensive end who played for both the Philadelphia Eagles, the Green Bay Packers, and the Carolina Panther, AND Mr. Bobby Layne, a Hall of Fame quarterback during the pre-Super Bowl NFL years.

Trivia of the Week
Jake Plummer received his nickname from this wrestler. Extra Credit: The wrestler with the nickname took the nickname from this NFL player.

Trivia of the Week 2
Bobby Layne won three NFL championships for this team during the 1950s. Extra Credit: Name the only 3 teams to have been playing in the NFL since 1970 that have NOT been in a Super Bowl.

Answers to December 12's Trivia of the Week
For which team did Randle play after leaving Minnesota until his retirement in 2003.
Seattle Seahawks
Extra Credit: With 137.5 all-time sacks, Randle is tied with this MVP of Super Bowl XX. Richard Dent

Cliff Lee: Trade to Seattle complete & Bradley to Seattle, Silva to Cubs
Seattle is busy. And for some reason, I think it might be a move in the right direction. Jack Zduriencik did some good work in Milwaukee; we'll see if he can duplicate it with the M's. As for all those Bradley doubters, we'll see.

If Ochocinco Honors Henry, Union To Pay Fines
Anyone not living under a rock knows that Chris Henry died this past week. The story of his death is at this point unimportant. It is now about remembering his life and mourning his death. Though I think Chad is generally loco, I respect his decision to honor his teammate. And I also respect the union's decision. Rest in peace, Chris...

TD's NFL Picks - Week 15
For those of you who read my Thursday post about Thursday's and tonight's games, you know that I did not, at that time, have the picks that I made back in August. I chose Indianapolis. And I chose Dallas. But keep in mind that I had New Orleans going 4-12 before the season. Called that one...

Chicago @ Baltimore
I've seen the first Facebook group calling for Lovie to be fired. Cutler hasn't helped the situation. A 5-8 record is a rather sad thing. Baltimore, meanwhile, still seeks a playoff spot. Many pundits think it will be theirs. I tend to agree. August choice: Baltimore Ravens. Present choice: Baltimore Ravens

New England @ Buffalo
It's still New England's division to lose. Will Moss dog it? Will the wheels keep falling off the truck? I think they'll get it done against the Bills. August choice: Buffalo Bills. Present choice: New England Patriots

Arizona @ Detroit
Arizona has been known to play clunkers. See last week's game. But they don't usually play 2 clunkers in a row. August choice: Arizona Cardinals. Present choice: Arizona Cardinals

Cleveland @ Kansas City
Who will get the higher draft pick? Perhaps that isn't a fair assessment as both teams have shown some life towards the end. Not enough life not to be disregarded this year, but enough to make me think twice about the game. Oh, and I wouldn't want to play in Arrowhead in December. Ever. August choice: Kansas City Chiefs. Present choice: Kansas City Chiefs

Atlanta @ New York Jets
An interesting game. And downright intriguing if both Sanchez, Ryan, and Turner all play. New York can still get that last AFC spot. Atlanta can serve as a back breaker. August choice: Atlanta Falcons. Present choice: New York Jets

San Francisco @ Philadelphia
Is it just me or is Philly coming on at the right time? I don't think I'd want to play them in the playoffs. August choice: Philadelphia Eagles. Present choice: Philadelphia Eagles

Green Bay @ Pittsburgh
Let's see, would I want to be the team that had to play Pittsburgh at home after they were embarrassed twice? No. But that's just what the Packers have to do. And what's more interesting is that I think the Packers have it in them to beat a reeling Steelers team. August choice: Pittsburgh Steelers. Present choice: Green Bay Packers

Houston @ St. Louis
The Rams shut down practice this week because of the swine flu. And moving on... August choice: Houston Texans. Present choice: Houston Texans

Miami @ Tennessee
It's amazing to me that Miami can still win the AFC East. What a difference a couple years makes in that division. (Yes, I know they won it last year, but the Pats didn't have Brady.) Tennessee, however, can play spoiler. I had a hard time choosing this one because the Titans have shown that they are a strong team. But, I like the fact that Miami keeps plugging even after losing Pennington and Brown. August choice: Tennessee Titans. Present choice: Miami Dolphins

Oakland @ Denver
This isn't a gimme. Denver best not be thinking it is. If they don't think it is, then they'll probably win. August choice: Denver Broncos. Present choice: Denver Broncos

Cincinnati @ San Diego
This won't be an easy game for the Bengals. But the Chargers better watch out for that emotional boost. I think they can handle it, but then again I'm not certain how much boost there will be for an already good team. August choice: San Diego Chargers. Present choice: San Diego Chargers

Tampa Bay @ Seattle
Seattle generally kills teams that are worse than they. The problem is that they get killed by most that are better. In the end, no one really cares about this game. August choice: Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Present choice: Seattle Seahawks

Minnesota @ Carolina
This is the first Sunday game that I feel is kinda eh. Sure, Minnesota belongs. But Carolina? Not so much. I suppose the networks can't get everything right. August choice: Carolina Panthers. Present choices: Minnesota Vikings

New York Football Giants @ Washington
The Jints need this one - and every other one - from here on out. Unfortunately, they're getting an improved division opponent that can give them a run for their money. We'll see if the G-Men are worth their meddle. August choice: New York Football Giants. Present choice: New York Football Giants

There you have it, sports fans. If I don't speak to you - or write - prior to next Saturday, have a very Merry Christmas. And until next I write, happy sporting...

TD's Week 15 Thursday and Saturday Night NFL Picks

These titles are getting longer and longer... Soon, they'll be playing professional football every night of the week.

Well, as I said, I am taking a hiatus of sorts... except for ranting and raving about sports. In this special edition, I simply choose the winners of the Thursday and Saturday night games:

Indianapolis @ Jacksonville
It's all over the news. Bill Polian says the Colts will play all the healthy players tonight. What does that mean exactly? It means that Bill Polian is speaking instead of Jim Caldwell and Peyton Manning. A stroke of genius, in fact, because it takes the pressure off the team and puts it on the GM. What do I think the Colts will do tonight? I think they'll play the game to win. You might recall a supposedly meaningless final game a few years ago in which the New England Patriots beat the New York Football Giants. Meaningless after all? No. What about injuries? Well, what about them? They happen. And if they happen, you find a way to suck it up and move on. What if the injury is to Peyton Manning? Yes, that would suck. Yes, that would most likely end the Colts' attempt at anything else this season. But what would be the difference, I ask, if Peyton got hurt in the final game of the season versus the first game of the playoffs? In the end, they're not the winners. Same outcome. So, I'm waxing poetic, and I haven't said anything about the opposing team. I'll say it here: the Jacksonville Jaguars are average. How do I call this game? I call it based on who should win given the better team, i.e. Indianapolis Colts. (Alas, my picks are at home - I'm typing at work - and I therefore can't say who I originally chose at the moment. I'll have to include that on Saturday...)

Dallas @ New Orleans
Dallas supposedly has the last, best shot to defeat the Saints. Based on record, perhaps. Based on play, not so much. Meanwhile, Sean Payton has, in my opinion, taken the correct approach to the undefeated season. Full speed ahead! Or better yet, just do it. That attitude is the one to have. And even if they don't win it all, we'll all know that they were one of the best offensive teams - at least - of the decade. You want me to talk about Dallas? Probably not. I already have a bias. But, that bias aside, I'll put it this way. Wade needs to take the Charlie Weis express. Jimmy Jones, I know you have an ego, but Wade just isn't the one. Move on. TD chooses: New Orleans Saints

It's Personal: A Hiatus of Sorts...

Friends, Romans, Countrymen, lend me your beers...

No, really, please. As much beer as you'd like to offer...

Anyway...

I speak of a hiatus in the title. And, in truth, I had been on a hiatus of sorts with my vacation that spanned November and December. Christmas planning, school planning, softball planning, and work planning ensued. An excuse (or rather excuses), I know, but one that I must use as they all became higher priorities than this blog. Except for on Saturdays when I rant and rave about something related to sports.

Alas, I do not foresee a time in the near future when that will change drastically. With school coming on January 4th and softball beginning soon after, I'll be lucky to have much time to devote to writing in this blog. I'm not saying I won't, mind you, but it will be a rarer happening.

Yes, I will continue to write the Sporting Rants & Raves post as long as the NFL season persists. And I sincerely hope to capture some other stories from time to time. But I can't promise anything...

Many thanks to those who do read. And I hope to give you food for thought sooner rather than later. Or maybe beer for thought. That would be tasty...

Sporting Rants & Raves: December 12, 2009

Happy 42nd Birthday to Mr. John Randle formerly of the Minnesota Vikings. A terror on the defensive side of the ball, Randle was a dominant defensive tackle during his tenure in Minnesota.

Trivia of the Week
For which team did Randle play after leaving Minnesota until his retirement in 2003. Extra Credit: With 137.5 all-time sacks, Randle is tied with this MVP of Super Bowl XX.

Answers to December 5's Trivia of the Week
Art Monk was inducted into the HOF in 2008. Can you name at least 2 other members of that class? Fred Dean, Darrell Green, Emmitt Thomas, Andre Tippett, Gary Zimmerman
Extra Credit: Art Monk is a distant relative of this jazz musician. Thelonius Monk

Ingram delivers Alabama its first Heisman
I found it a bit hard to believe that Alabama has never given the world a Heisman Trophy winner... until now. Congratulations to Mark Ingram, Jr. for an outstanding sophomore year.

Ramifications for Woods and his sport unfolding
PGA and Gillette marketing people cringe at the headline. No more Tiger for now. What will it do to the sport? NOTHING! Because golf existed prior to Tiger, and golf will continue long after. As for the poor marketers, I'm certain they'll find someone else to exploit. And Tiger? Well, I hope Tiger figures out what he wants; otherwise, we may see one of the greatest wastes of talent in history...

Everywhere Brian Kelly slept, Notre Dame was his dream
Rather than wax poetic about this choice, I will pull a quotation spoken by Brian Kelly's college football coach in a recent article: "When Brian left [Assumption College], there were basically three things I thought he would do," [Bernie] Gaughan said. "One would be president of the United States. One would be the pope. The third would be Notre Dame's coach. The other two jobs were full."

Navy wins 8th straight over Army, 17-3
The streak and the score speak for itself. The midshipmen have bragging rights for yet another year...

TD's NFL Picks - Week 14
Well, Cleveland surprised the hell out of me. Or maybe they didn't. It was actually Pittsburgh that surprised me. I haven't seen them play that badly in a long time. Anyway, I've decided to add another dimension to my picks this week as a result of that Thursday night game. Why, you ask? Because before the season began, I chose every game. And in August, I chose Cleveland to beat Pittsburgh. So, I shall be including not only my official choice but also the choice I made 4 months ago...

New Orleans @ Atlanta
Not many more challenges for New Orleans. There's Atlanta this week and Dallas next. I don't think either have what it takes to get the job done. August choice: Atlanta Falcons. Present choice: New Orleans Saints.

Detroit @ Baltimore
I keep saying that I believe Detroit is heading in the right direction. But they don't yet have what it takes. August choice: Baltimore Ravens. Present choice: Baltimore Ravens

Green Bay @ Chicago
Classic Norse Division matchup. Chicago plays for their last shred of hope for the playoffs. Green Bay plays to widen their wild card lead. August choice: Chicago Bears. Present choice: Green Bay Packers

Seattle @ Houston
This game sees the only game this week pitting 2 teams with the same record (5-7) against each other. Not a banner year for either team. And I think Seattle's the weaker based on division. August choice: Houston Texans. Present choice: Houston Texans

Denver @ Indianapolis
The Colts still have home field to clinch. But this game is obviously more important for the Broncos to keep pace. Still, it's Peyton. August choice: Indianapolis Colts. Present choice: Indianapolis Colts

Miami @ Jacksonville
Another Florida battle between 2 teams who still have that chance to get into the playoffs. Both need this game. But who will want it more? August choice: Jacksonville Jaguars. Present choice: Jacksonville Jaguars

Buffalo @ Kansas City
A bit of a yawner. KC shows flashes of talent but not enough for me to side with them just yet. August choice: Kansas City Chiefs. Present choice: Buffalo Bills.

Cincinnati @ Minnesota
A better game than I thought it would be earlier in the year. And this one is climate controlled, which benefits Favre. August choice: Cincinnati Bengals. Present choice: Minnesota Vikings

Carolina @ New England
New England certainly isn't the powerhouse it was. But do not underestimate them. They still have some doozies left in them. Perhaps even in this year's playoffs. August choice: New England Patriots. Present choice: New England Patriots.

New York Jets @ Tampa Bay
Not a real interesting game here. The Jets aren't quite yet playing for pride, though I think they will be soon. As for Tampa, well they're getting a new QB ready. August choice: Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Present choice: New York Jets

St. Louis @ Tennessee
Does St. Louis have a plan for the future? Any plan? Maybe move back to Los Angeles. Or even back to Cleveland. Oh well. August choice: Tennessee Titans. Present choice: Tennessee Titans

Washington @ Oakland
This game does not appeal to me at all. Maybe it's because both teams have a disappointing inability to build a good team. August choice: Washington Redskins. Present choice: Oakland Raiders.

San Diego @ Dallas
Dallas has the most unfortunate last 4 games in the league, at least in my humble opinion. San Diego, New Orleans, Washington, Philadelphia. And San Diego is very dangerous. August choice: Dallas Cowboys. Present choice: San Diego Chargers

Philadelphia @ New York Giants
Last week, I said Philly would win the NFC East. And this week, they can take one more step to making that a reality. I know the Jints played a good game against the Cowboys last week, but I am still afraid they haven't fixed what's broken. August choice: Philadelphia Eagles. Present choice: Philadelphia Eagles

Arizona @ San Francisco
Arizona is looking good. They dismantled the Vikings last week. San Francisco, meanwhile, got beat by the Seachickens. Not so inspiring. August choice: Arizona Cardinals. Present choice: Arizona Cardinals

There you have it sports fans. And not, it is far too late for me to be up any longer. Until next I write, happy sporting...

TD's Week 14 NFL Pick

I received a friendly reminder from Uncle Mark to choose the winner of tonight's game. Of course, I've been so busy that I haven't check my email since this morning. Thus, I forgot again. Be not afraid, however, as it is still 0-0 with 10:58 remaining in the 1st, according to yahoo...

Pittsburgh @ Cleveland
I'd say that anything could happen in this game based on the rivalry and Pittsburgh's 4-game slide, but I wouldn't believe myself if I said that. Instead, I think the Browns are actually so bad that they should move to the USFL for a time with a new mascot - leaving the Browns mascot and its history in the NFL - until such a time that they can prove they can have a winning season. Oh, and they can drop Mangini too while they're at it. TD chooses: Pittsburgh Steelers

It's Personal: A Trip to Church

Welcome back, readers. After what turned out to be a three-week hiatus - Sporting Rants & Raves excluded, of course - I have returned with new and exciting - or maybe not so exciting - attempts at intriguing and / or boring you to tears. And so, without further ado, I give to you a story having to do with a recent trip to Church.

I go on Sundays - go figure - to St. James Cathedral in Seattle. I prefer high mass with all the bells, whistles, and - occasionally - holy smoke. Otherwise known as incense. As with every other Sunday morning in recent memory, I woke at approximately 7 a.m. and stayed in bed to read. I arose from the warmth of the bed at 8:30 and began to prepare. Arranging the clothes, showering, playing Mafia Wars, and the like.

I got into my car at 9:30 a.m. and made my way to I-5. For those of you who know the area, I enter the interstate from Boeing Access Road. For those of you unfamiliar, I'll give a brief description. I sit at a stoplight facing west. When the stoplight turns green, I take a left - going south for no more than an eighth of a mile - and then begin driving around a loop that turned me 180 degrees. I then have to merge into a a left lane while cars exiting at that exit merge into the right lane. It reminds me of many New Jersey exits - at least on the Turnpike.

That sets the stage. So, there I was merging into that left lane and ready to merge fully onto the highway. At 9:40 a.m. on a Sunday. I see ahead of me a PT Cruiser being tailgated by an off-white sedan, the make of which I do not recall. Suddenly, I see - do not hear for whatever reason - the PT Cruiser lurch forward awkwardly. I notice a broken right tail light. Then, I see the sedan swerve, fishtailing in the middle of I-5. If any other car had been there, it would have been a very serious accident. But, thankfully, there were no oncoming cars. Just me merging onto the road. The sedan finally comes to a stop horizontally across the center two lanes.

I slow a tad, wondering if I'm about to witness a train wreck. I don't. But I do witness the sedan spin its wheels enough to cause a significant amount of tire smoke just before it launches down the highway. I instinctively press the gas and glance at the Texas license plate. I memorize the number before he catapults down the road. I choose not to chase.

But a couple cars do, including a blue Durango.

And then I drive. A bit shocked by what I had just witnessed, I simply glide along on autopilot towards the James Street exit. Going through my mind? Should I or shouldn't I call? On the one hand, I don't want to get involved. No one was really hurt. And that guy will get his. Karma will do its worst. On the other hand, I wonder if it's somehow my civic duty. I start lecturing myself about being a good member of society.

That war wages until I find a parking spot. I consider what to do. I look up to the twin spires of the cathedral and just know that I have to call. I didn't ask what Jesus would do. I didn't pray about it, specifically. I just knew that calling was the right answer. So, I dial 911 on the cell and explain what I have seen. It seems I wasn't the first person to call. But I was the only one with the license plate number.

I didn't get a call back. But I did feel as though I had done the right thing...

Sporting Rants & Raves: December 5, 2009

Happy 52nd birthday to Mr. Art Monk, a former wide receiver in the NFL who was inducted into the National Football League Hall of Fame in 2008. A member of the Washington Redskins, New York Jets, and Philadelphia Eagles, he is the first and only player to record over 100 receptions (106 in 1984) in a season before NFL rules changes prior to the 1990 season that ushered in the "pass happy era".

Trivia of the Week
Art Monk was inducted into the HOF in 2008. Can you name at least 2 other members of that class? Extra Credit: Art Monk is a distant relative of this jazz musician.

Answers to November 28's Trivia of the Week
For which team is Righetti presently the pitching coach? San Francisco Giants
Extra Credit: For which other 4 teams did Righetti play between 1991-1995? San Francisco Giants, Oakland Athletics, Toronto Blue Jays, Chicago White Sox

College Fare
I don't think I'd be allowed to continue writing about sports if I didn't make reference to the Florida v Alabama game. 1 v 2. I didn't get a chance to watch, but based on highlights and stories, Alabama essentially dominated Tebow and the Gators. Let's see how crimson looks in Pasadena. Against the green and yellow of the Ducks...

In other news, Boise State put their finishing touch on an undefeated season.

East Carolina defeated Houston yet again for their second straight Conference USA title.

Arizona has given USC another loss at home. So sad...

And it looks like the other Huskies might just pull it off against Cal.

Too soon to tell for UCONN at this point...

Woods takes golf into a year of uncertainty
With great power comes great responsibility. Just ask Peter Parker. And Tiger Woods. What happens when an icon disappoints the public? Some in the public are startled by the fact that such a thing can happen. And then come the rumors. Then the jokes. Then the questions about what will happen to golf as a result. Then the people who say that Tiger Woods the player must be separated from Tiger Woods the person. He'll lose some fans. Gain others. Suit up and play golf again. Reconcile with his wife and tell the public as much. People will forget. And we'll all move on. And in a couple years we'll watch as Tiger and Lefty vie in the Masters. Or the British Open. And in the end, as John and Paul said of that sad day in the graveyard, no one will be saved.

TD's NFL Picks - Week 13
Rapid fire... I have about 20 minutes. And then a shave and shower before going out.

Oh, yes, you didn't miss it. Rather, I missed it. The Jets-Bills game. Completely spaced. First day back to work. Lost track and stayed at work late. So I take the loss.

As for the others

Philadelphia @ Atlanta
I think Philly is the best team in the NFC East. Not by much, mind you. But I think they will win the division. Atlanta has too many holes right now. TD chooses: Philadelphia Eagles

Tampa @ Carolina
Tampa's bad. Carolina's not as bad. If you combined their winning percentages, you'd still be below 50%. Not averaged... combined. TD chooses the one with the better record, i.e. Carolina Panthers

St. Louis @ Chicago
I am not inclined to say that the Rams will win another this year. TD chooses: Chicago Bears

Detroit @ Cincinnati
I am encouraged by the Lions, but not enough to toast the Bagels. Then again, I have to remember back to that Raiders game. Eh, fluke I say. Bagels prove me right. TD chooses: Cincinnati Bengals

Tennessee @ Indianapolis
These Colts best be watching themselves in this one. These Titans promise to be a dangerous opponent. And, Peyton, stop waiting for the second half to come back. Just start from the beginning and don't let go of the lead. Or else it's gonna burn you... TD chooses: Indianapolis Colts

New Orleans @ Washington
New Orleans plays 1 more team with a winning record. ONE. Okay, 2. Atlanta is at 6-5. TD chooses: New Orleans Saints

Oakland @ Pittsburgh
This matchup used to be something in the 70s. Dare I say the 70s are a long time ago. TD chooses: Pittsburgh Steelers

Houston @ Jacksonville
Tough choice not much separates them. And the coin flips. TD chooses: Jacksonville Jaguars

Denver @ Kansas City
KC is showing signs of life. The problem for them? So is Denver. TD chooses: Denver Broncos

San Diego @ Cleveland
And next... TD chooses: San Diego Chargers

Minnesota @ Arizona
This only has the chance to be a shootout if Warner plays. And I'm not convinced that he will play. Not only because he's hurt. But because the rest of the NFC West is that bad. TD chooses: Minnesota Vikings

Dallas @ New York Giants
Last time they played, I chose Dallas. Since I'm superstitious when it comes to such things, I'm doing it again. TD chooses: Dallas Cowboys

San Francisco @ Seattle
Not one I care to see, to be honest. I really don't know what to expect. Seattle shows up some weeks and eats dirt on others. TD chooses: San Francisco 49ers

New England @ Miami
This would have been more intriguing if Ronnie Brown were playing. And if Dan Marino were at quarterback. And if Don Shula was coaching. But none of that is happening. TD chooses: New England Patriots

Baltimore @ Green Bay
This is when the frozen tundra's at its best. TD chooses: Green Bay Packers

There you have it sports fans. UCONN game is still too close to call, and I'm off to shave and shower. Until next I write, happy sporting...

Where were you going at 2:25 a.m. Tiger?

I see on Yahoo the headline, Weis facing possible finale with Irish. I say, possible?

The NFL is finally taking concussions more seriously. There is a new requirement to seek a second opinion - not the team doctor - from a specialist. The player with the concussion can only return to the field once cleared by both doctors.

Today marks the 102nd Apple Cup. After last year's ridiculously good game between 2 ridiculously bad teams, we'll see if the other Huskies can do something against the cats across the mountains.

TD's NFL Picks - Week 12
Whatever the Giants were expected to have, well, they don't. That loss was embarrassing. So, let's see who wants it in the other games this weekend.

Tampa @ Atlanta
Division rivalry makes this interesting. And a Bucs offense that seems to be scoring a few more points. But, I think Atlanta's better. TD chooses: Atlanta Falcons

Miami @ Buffalo
This is the time of year that I wouldn't want to play in Buffalo. A weather check indicates it isn't that bad up there... yet. T.O. had quite the game last week, but the Jags still won. I predict that this next Florida team will do the same. TD chooses: Miami Dolphins

Cincinnati @ Cleveland
I'd say this could be a good game. The Battle of Ohio. But Cleveland is that bad. And Mangini is utterly terrible. TD chooses: Cincinnati Bengals

Indianapolis @ Houston
Indy barely won in the first meeting between these teams. And this is no gimme, especially now that Indy has the 'undefeated' target on them. I have faith, though. TD chooses: Indianapolis Colts

Chicago @ Minnesota
I don't think anyone's impressed with Cutler and the Bears. A 4-6 record is very disappointing for this team. As for Minnesota, their 9-1 record speaks for itself. TD chooses: Minnesota Vikings

Carolina @ New York Jets
At 4-6 these teams need to figure out what they want this year. From the looks of it, Carolina wants the Wild Card spot, but injuries and poor play are limiting them. Meanwhile, the Jets just want Sanchez to get better. Better than 6 TDs and 14 INTs. TD chooses: Carolina Panthers

Washington @ Philadelphia
I have no idea which Iggles team will show up. But I do know that the Redskins have little offense of which to speak. I think this will be a relatively low scoring affair. TD chooses: Philadelphia Eagles

Seattle @ St. Louis
Here's a game that doesn't interest me at all. Both suck. TD chooses: Seattle Seahawks

Arizona @ Tennessee
A tricky one. Kurt Warner may not play. If he doesn't, I say Tennessee. If he does, then the Cardinals have a much better chance. But don't underestimate a Titan team that's on a 4-game winning streak and that has its defensive secondary back. Still, I'll bet that Warner plays... and wins. TD chooses: Arizona Cardinals

Kansas City @ San Diego
Kansas City is playing better than they were earlier in the season. The problem for them: so is San Diego. TD chooses: San Diego Chargers

Jacksonville @ San Francisco
An interesting game. The Jags are presently 6-4 and on the cusp of the Wild Card. San Fran, meanwhile, needs to catch up to have a chance. I personally think the 49ers just aren't ready yet. TD chooses: Jacksonville Jaguars

Pittsburgh @ Baltimore
No one knows what will happen in this game. After last year, I know they'll need an ambulance or two. Baltimore has the bigger problems; their defense just isn't what it used to be. Not to say the Steelers don't have their own problems with Roethlisberger a game time decision. TD chooses: Pittsburgh Steelers

New England @ New Orleans
In the battle of the News, England brings their A-game to the undefeated doorstep of Orleans. It promises to be a great game. And I know I'm not rooting for England in this matchup. TD chooses: New Orleans Saints

Another week. Only 5 more to go after this. Almost doesn't seem possible. Until next I write, happy sporting...

TD's Thursday NFL Picks - Week 12

Happy Thanksgiving to all!!! I hope the turkey is particularly tasty for all of you...

Of course, Thanksgiving also means football. It means Lyman Hall v. Sheehan (which is probably just about over now). It means East Haven v. Branford. It used to mean Hamden v. Notre Dame.

And it means Detroit, Dallas, and another pair of teams that rotates each year. And so, on to the picks...

Green Bay @ Detroit
I could editorialize about how Detroit shouldn't have this Thanksgiving game anymore. Tradition be damned. It certainly hasn't led them to become any better. But, I shan't. Instead, I'll just say that Green Bay got a wake up call from the creamsicled Bucs three weeks ago, and it seems to have made a difference. All you Lie Down fans can say that Stafford threw five touchdowns last week... against the Browns. TD chooses: Green Bay Packers

Oakland @ Dallas
Really? They couldn't come up with the Washington/Dallas game today. Or even Philly. Maybe the Jints. Or even Green Bay (though I can't complain about the Detroit/Green Bay game). Oh well. I don't anticipate a particularly good game. Perhaps only if Dallas plays down to the Raidahs. TD chooses: Dallas Cowboys

New York Giants @ Denver
Here's the game. Two teams that looked unbeatable at least through week 5. And then, they both vomited all over the place. The Jints lost four straight before barely beating Atlanta last week. And the Broncs haven't won since 10/19. It may come down to who wants to give the game away more... TD chooses: New York Football Giants

Again, Happy Gobble Gobble! And go Giants!

Sporting Rants & Raves: November 21, 2009

Happy 89th birthday to Mr. Stan Musial.

Happy 43rd birthday to Mr. Troy Aikman.

Happy 40th birthday to Mr. Ken Griffey, Jr.

Happy 38th birthday to Mr. Michael Strahan.

A plethora of talent born on this day, it seems...

Trivia of the Week
Musial and Griffey are 2 of 10 outfielders named to the Major League Baseball All-Century Team. How many of the remaining 8 can you name?

Trivia of the Week 2
Strahan sacked Aikman for the first time on 12/24/1994. How many more times did Strahan sack Aikman in his career?

Answers to November 14's Trivia of the Week
Kyle Orton is one of only three Purdue quarterbacks to start at least three consecutive bowl games. Name the well known present NFL starter - and Purdue alum - who accomplished this feat. Drew Brees
Extra Credit: Name the other lesser known QB to do so. (Hint: He played in only 40 games in an NFL career that spanned 11 years between 1981-1992.) Mark Herrmann

Dixon’s 4-yard TD gives UConn 33-30 win over ND
Other than the NFL Picks, this is the only headline I will include. The UCONN Huskies finally won one of those close games. And some of you might say that it just signals how bad Weis and the Irish are. But I think some credit must be given to this Huskies team. Remarkable. And imagine where they could be...

TD's NFL Picks - Week 11
Quick hits in this rather important week...

Pittsburgh @ Kansas City
Unless the Steelers don't show up - even with Polamalu out - Kansas City will have a long day. TD chooses: Pittsburgh Steelers

Seattle @ Minnesota
Looking at team stat leaders, I see Favre has 600+ more yards than Hasselbeck, Rice has 200+ more yards than Housh, and Peterson has 500+ more yards than Jones (who isn't playing). Umm yeah. TD chooses: Minnesota Vikings

Washington @ Dallas
Honestly, I can't help but choose Dallas with it being at home and with them being in first place. But apart from those rather useless indicators, I got nothing for you. It's a rivalry, and it often lives up to the billing. TD chooses: Dallas Cowboys

San Francisco @ Green Bay
I was watching the 1/3/1999 Wild Card game between the 49ers and Packers on the NFL Network earlier. Young v. Favre. Garrison Hearst and Dorsey Levens. Well, tomorrow, we'll see Smith v. Rodgers. Gore and Grant. Both teams are underachieving this year. Only one game separates them. TD chooses: Green Bay Packers

Buffalo @ Jacksonville
Jacksonville is showing life. And grit. But I wouldn't want to be the head coach this week trying to plan for Buffalo. Why? Because I always have concerns when there's as significant a change on an opposing team as there was in Buffalo this past week, i.e. a new head coach. Still, TD chooses: Jacksonville Jaguars

Cleveland @ Detroit
TD chooses to ignore this ridiculous semi-professional game. Okay, fine, TD chooses: Detroit Lions

Indianapolis @ Baltimore
Short weeks for Indy and Baltimore. Not as short for Indy as for Baltimore, but given the game they had to play, I'd say they needed that extra day. This game? Well, the Ravens D has to show up or else no dice. I'm thinking no dice. TD chooses: Indianapolis Colts

Atlanta @ New York Giants
At 5-4 each team needs a win. Atlanta can only hope to stay afloat for the Wild Card. But the Jints still have that chance to win the division. God, I hope they figured something out on their bye. Problem is, they don't generally play well coming out of their bye. Nevertheless, TD chooses: New York Football Giants

New Orleans @ Tampa Bay
Division rivals? Yep. The Saints are missing Bush? Yep. New QB in Tampa not looking bad? Yep. You still think the Saints will win? Yep. TD chooses: New Orleans Saints

Arizona @ St. Louis
The Rams have shown some life recently. They could pull off the upset. And any team can win on any day given the right conditions. TD chooses: Arizona Cardinals

New York Jets @ New England
After last week, the Pats want a win. And Belichick will be forcing the issue. The Jets, meanwhile, can't seem to right the ship. Rex Ryan's asking everyone from his mother to Bill Parcells for some help. TD chooses: New England Patriots

Cincinnati @ Oakland
Before the season, I chose Oakland to win this one. Nope, I didn't have any confidence in the Bagels either. And there's still something about them that just doesn't feel quite right. Still, I can't find anything about Oakland that doesn't feel quite wrong at the moment, so TD chooses: Cincinnati Bengals

Philadelphia @ Chicago
I had Philly at 13-3 for this season. And Chicago at 14-2. If that were true up to this point, this could be a blockbuster game. Instead, it's an important game to see who can be in the Wild Card hunt. TD chooses: Philadelphia Eagles

Tennessee @ Houston
Tennessee now has 3 wins in their last 3 games. Houston is 3-1 in their last 4 games with their only loss coming to the Colts before the bye. Division rivals. Oilers and Texans duking it out. Vince Young against Matt Schaub. Now, I'm just stalling to try to make up my mind. I did pick Houston prior to the season. It must be a sign. TD chooses: Houston Texans

Game of the Week
San Diego @ Denver
I don't know if this will actually be a good game. In fact, it has all the makings of a bad one. But it has to be the game of the week given what's on the line for each team. Denver's on the way down at 6-3. San Diego's on the way up with the same record. And I just don't see that changing. TD chooses: San Diego Chargers

There you have it sports fans. An abbreviated version for you. Until next I write, happy sporting...

A Little Break

It is Thursday, November 19, 2009. What does that mean, exactly?

It's my friend's - Matt - birthday. Happy Birthday Matt!

Abraham Lincoln gave the Gettysburg Address 146 years ago.

The Edsel was discontinued 50 years ago.

And in my lifetime, on this date 19 years ago Milli Vanilli was stripped of their Grammies.

Finally, this day begins my two-week vacation. That means I'll be taking a hiatus from posting. Except, I will post my weekly NFL picks in an abbreviated Sporting Rants and Raves on each Saturday during my vacation. Not to mention each Thursday. I almost missed last Thursday. Forgot all about the game between the 49ers and Bears. And somewhat glad I didn't watch it as it was a lemon.

Speaking of which, it's Thursday today, isn't it? With that said, let's see who's playing tonight...

Miami @ Carolina
John Fox's life became a little easier earlier this week when Ronnie Brown was put on the Injured Reserve List. Not a lot, mind you, but certainly somewhat. Because that may limit the Wildcat. And it means that the Panthers' D can concentrate on Ricky Williams. But, not so fast... The Dolphins might have a few different looks that no one has seen before. And that Carolina can't imagine. In the end, I predict a close game. But after seeing both teams last week, I think this one goes to a rising Panthers team. TD chooses: Carolina Panthers

Let's hope I do better this week than last...

It's Personal: Bolero

We had just returned from brunch at Geraldine's. (If ever you have the chance to go to Geraldine's in Columbia City, order the French Toast or the Casserole. Awesome.) We futzed around a bit, and Joseph got comfortable. The kiss of death for Joseph on a cool, dreary day. The key for me? I didn't change out of the clothes I'd worn to church that morning. And when 2 p.m. came, I was out the door.

I arrived at Meany Hall looking forward to the performance of Boléro. But I was pleasantly surprised by a slew of other performances from Ravel and Debussy. Apart from the Asian woman with the perma-fro behind me - rustling some plastic bag filled with goodies and chomping them much like a cow might in the middle of Iowa - the overall performance was impressive.

I do enjoy music, but I can't say that I enjoy music enough to know how to be critical. I do not frequent the symphony after all - the tickets were a gift from my mother - and go primarily to close my eyes and meditate to the sounds of harps and violas complementing each other.

Still, I knew Boléro and wondered how I would like a live performance. As the drummer began her tapping, the composer kept his hand by his side and directed as if a restraint was tied around his chest and arms. It is a piece that requires patience, a gradually blossoming work that both relaxes and inspires. Woodwinds give way to strings whilst the drummers keep a very difficult consistent beat. Perhaps a more critical ear could find a few missed notes from time to time, but I heard only the near perfect coalescence.

Apart from Ravel's most famous work, I learned something I'd never known, even after having studied music theory - a very beginner course - in college. Most - if not all of you - have witnessed The Sound of Music I'd imagine. And within that musical, you will recall the song, Do, Re, Mi. As most of you probably know as well, do, re, mi, etc. refer to notes on a scale in music. Well, every letter of the English alphabet can be assigned to these notes. Most people who know music understand that there are notes A-G. But it doesn't stop there...
  • Do - A, H, O, V
  • Re - B, I, P, W
  • Mi - C, J, Q, X
  • Fa - D, K, R, Y
  • So - E, L, S, Z
  • La - F, M, T
  • Ti - G, N, U
Knowing these 'mappings', if you will, a person can create a song associated with a name. Take Mike, for instance. The notes associated with M-I-K-E are La-Re-Fa-So. And there are times when composers will take a name like 'Mike', for instance, and create a song - or even a symphony. Maurice Ravel - composer of Boléro - happened to have done just that in celebration of the 100th anniversary (1909) of Franz Josef Haydn's death (1809). The result was Minuet on the Name of Haydn in G Major.

The last word... If ever you have the chance to attend the symphony I suggest you go. Even if it isn't your 'cup of tea' I think you'll be entertained. If not by the music, at least by some of the stuffy people in their odd garb...

Sporting Rants & Raves: November 14, 2009

Happy 27th birthday to Mr. Kyle Orton, the Quarterback of the Denver Broncos. With 2009 - thus far - being the best of his NFL career, it seems Orton may have the last laugh. It is too soon to tell, however, as it is altogether possible that Orton and the Broncs are on their way back to earth just in time for San Diego to come back and take the lead in the division yet again.

And I'd like to send an additional birthday wish. Happy 50th birthday to your friend and mine, Uncle Mark. I'll say this about his favorite team this weekend... The New York Football Giants can't lose.

Trivia of the Week
Kyle Orton is one of only three Purdue quarterbacks to start at least three consecutive bowl games. Name the well known present NFL starter - and Purdue alum - who accomplished this feat. Extra Credit: Name the other lesser known QB to do so. (Hint: He played in only 40 games in an NFL career that spanned 11 years between 1981-1992.)

Answers to November 7's Trivia of the Week
Jim Kaat played for 25 seasons in the Majors. Who are the only 2 pitchers that had longer tenures? Nolan Ryan and Tommy John
Extra Credit: What were their respective tenures in MLB? 27 and 26 years respectively

Gonna make it brief this evening after a long day of work...

Upset Alert - NCAA Football
Rutgers put quite the beat-down on South Florida, wouldn't you say... The first time South Florida has been shut out in the regular season in its 13-year history. Yipes. So much for revenge. Rutgers 31 - South Florida 0.

The University of Central Florida denied Houston's attempt at a comeback earlier today. Say goodbye to #13. UCF 37 - Houston 32.

I was a Trojan in high school. But I never liked USC with their maroon and gold. For many reasons. Well, today marks the end of their Pac-10 dominance for good as Stanford blew them out. And good riddance. Stanford 55 - USC 21.

It seems Butch Davis has the Canes' number. He hasn't lost yet against his former team. And UNC takes its 5th straight victory against a ranked opponent dating to last season. UNC 33 - Miami 24.

A quarterback throws a ball. It ricochets off a defensive player. The quarterback catches the ball. The quarterback attempts to throw it again. Do you know what that is? An illegal forward pass. And a reason Arizona came up short today against California. Cal 24 - Arizona 16.

TD's NFL Picks - Week 10
One line apiece...

Atlanta @ Carolina
Conference rivals vying for that second position in the South and, more importantly, the chance at the Wild Card. Ryan over Delhomme. TD chooses: Atlanta Falcons

Tampa Bay @ Miami
In this battle for Fla, the Dolphins and their Wildcats win by a whiskered nose. TD chooses: Miami Dolphins

Detroit @ Minnesota
The Lie Downs were actually up (good movie) 17-0 against the make believe ospreys. And then, they reverted to lying down. TD chooses: Minnesota Vikings

Denver @ Washington
This trip should help the Broncs halt that losing streak. TD chooses: Denver Broncos

Buffalo @ Tennessee
So T.O. might return tomorrow. And I care about this why? Owens and Evans have done squat for me in fantasy this year. And Young seems to have charged the Titans. TD chooses: Tennessee Titans

New Orleans @ St. Louis
Cough, cough, cough. Ahem. Cough. Uh. Yeah. Umm. TD chooses: New Orleans Saints

Cincinnati @ Pittsburgh
The Bagels got away with one earlier in the year. But have you seen Pittsburgh playing recently? They look like they did at the end of last year. When Pittsburgh's hitting on all cylinders, I don't think many can beat them. TD chooses: Pittsburgh Steelers

Jacksonville @ New York Jets
Yeah, I don't know. Will this be Sanchez the INT thrower? And will it be the Jax I saw in Seattle? If both are the case, this could be a trainwreck. But I think Ryan has spoken to his rookie QB. TD chooses: New York Jets

Kansas City @ Oakland
Could we sub in a good college game for this one and just let them watch? I'll go with the Chiefs since they've just extracted some cancer; it might be a breath of fresh air to their lockerroom. TD chooses: Kansas City Chiefs

Seattle @ Arizona
Arizona destroyed Seattle in Seattle. So why would I think the Seachickens have any chance in the desert? Oddly, I don't think they'll be destroyed. But I don't think they'll win either. TD chooses: Arizona Cardinals

Dallas @ Green Bay
A battle between long-time NFC rivals. Romo and Rodgers. Philips and McCarthy. They're no Aikman v. Favre. And Johnson v. Holmgren. Ah well. I'll be rooting for GB but I think I used up a lot of my luck back in that Super Bowl against the undefeated Pats. TD chooses: Dallas Cowboys

Philadelphia @ San Diego
A Green Bay fan AND a Charger fan. I have a whole slew of teams for whom to root. And I think SD can do it at home even with Westbrook returning for the Iggles. TD chooses: San Diego Chargers

Baltimore @ Cleveland
Okay, really, it was 1995. That's when Cleveland left and went to Baltimore. And then Cleveland came back. And there was this rivalry. And Baltimore got good. And Cleveland never did. Then the Browns hired Mangini. And they're worse than ever. TD chooses: Baltimore Ravens

Game of the Week
New England @ Indianapolis
Here we go again. We had a year off from the hype. Now it's back and well deserved. Brady and the Pats at 6-2. Manning and the Colts at 8-0. The Pats are gritty, and they win. The Colts are smooth as silk. And they win. Methinks the Pats D is the question mark here. And Manning's looking forward to that. TD chooses: Indianapolis Colts

Another day. Another dollar. And Notre Dame loses again. Until next I write, happy sporting...

TD's Thursday Night Pick: November 12, 2009

Even after setting myself a reminder, I forgot. But I just checked the score and it's still 0-0 in the first. Check the time.

Chicago @ San Francisco
I suppose the story line is Singletary against da Bears. Yeah, I guess. The real story line? San Francisco's bad again. And the Bears have the opportunity to fall even further behind the Vikings. So? TD chooses: Chicago Bears

3WW (Errant, Hanker, Murky): Whose Watch Is It?

A murky Saturday morning in Seattle. One of those days on the cusp of winter when darkness looms at dawns and dusks thanks to lingering grey pillow clouds. I walk from my parked Camry along deserted leafy sidewalks. I see only blanketed lumps in doorways, homeless people holding onto the belief that there might be another warm and sunny day in the Emerald City. Perhaps they'll get their wish but not on this day.

I walk into the building where I work every business day. And some weekends. I badge into the lobby and wave to the security guard. A deaf over-the-hill white-haired gentleman who grunts his greetings without making eye contact. I proceed to the elevators and find a young man waiting. He looks up briefly with his bright blue eyes and grins awkwardly. I take no notice and pull out my Blackberry hoping to avoid conversation. No email. So I proceed to the New York Times business news.

The elevator arrives with a ding; the young gentleman and I enter. The doors close. I press 17. The gentleman presses 23. The elevator begins to ascend. I am on Sports Illustrated by then reading about AI's potential retirement. We begin to slow. Then a few errant noises a person never wants to hear in an elevator. Best described in old Batman terms as BANG! CLANK! CRUNCH! The elevator stops. The number 17 is lit. The doors open. Nothing but sheer wall. The doors close. We don't move. Not good.

'Figures,' I hear from behind me. The young man seems as frustrated as I.

'Yep, I should have just stayed home,' I say as I look back at him.

'Yep.'

I ring the emergency bell hoping against hope that the deaf old weekend security guard might hear. Doubtful, I think to myself.

After I try that for a little while, I turn around and see that the gentleman - all of about 25 years of age - is sitting with his legs crossed.

'Where do you work?' I ask him.

'Oh, I don't work here,' he says.

'That makes it worse,' I note with a sarcastic grin.

'Not really,' he says in all seriousness. 'It gives me time to reflect on what I'm about to do.' I don't particularly like the way he speaks those words.

'What are you about to do?' I inquire.

'You promise not to tell?' he asks.

What am I supposed to say to that? If I don't promise, then it's awkward in an elevator where it's awkward anyway. If I do promise, we keep a conversation going and it's less awkward, though still in an elevator.

'Sure,' I say.

'I'm on my way up to kill my girlfriend,' he admits matter-of-factly.

Yeah, I didn't want to know. 'Umm, huh?' I stammer, trying to formulate what I should say to a person that says something like that. And in such close quarters.

'I found a guy's watch in the bedroom this morning. I know it's not my watch. And her family lives in Florida. So, I don't think it belongs to anyone from her family. She doesn't have any male friends about whom I know. I can therefore only deduce that it belongs to a guy with whom she's having an affair.'

I listen to him use 'whom' and 'deduce', and I wonder if I've entered some kind of Twilight Zone. Why didn't I just keep looking at random sites on the Blackberry? I should have checked Don Banks' NFL Power Rankings. Instead, here I am with a lunatic in a small space.

'Umm, well, umm, yeah...'

'Oh, I see.' He says to me. 'You don't have to worry. You seem like a good guy. You remind me of a guy with whom I served in the marines in Iraq. Quality guy. Always kept his word. Very honest. As opposed to that lying bitch on the 23rd floor.' He zones out for a moment staring at the wall.

Cuckoo, I think to myself.

'Sorry, guy. I'll bet your name is Sam. Right, Sam is it?'

I don't know what to say. My name isn't Sam, but I'm dealing with a guy who seems to be missing the entire suit of clubs from his deck. 'Yeah, Sam.'

'Right. See, I knew I'd run into a Sam today. Just had a feeling. Hey, maybe you can help me out and distract her while I sneak into the office to kill her. You want to do that for me?'

I feel like we're talking about playing a prank on someone. 'Sorry. Umm, I have to get to some things. And I'm already late as it is.'

'Yeah, I understand. I didn't mean to inconvenience you. I have a plan anyway. Well, I had a plan. I'm starting to wonder if it's such a good idea at this point. I mean, obviously someone up there doesn't think I should go through with it.' He points up to the ceiling. 'Or else I wouldn't be stuck in here with you, Sam. You know, Sam saved my life in Iraq. He tackled me as some insurgents opened fire. Took a bullet in the fleshy part of his leg. Good guy, that Sam.' He zoned out again.

'I think I'm going to try the bell again,' I tell him.

'Yeah, please. Go ahead. I think I'd like to get out of here anyway. Now that I think of it, the watch might belong to her brother who stayed with us last weekend. As a matter of fact, I saw him wearing it.' He chuckles to himself. 'That's right. It's her brother's. And to think I was going to kill her.'

The elevator comes back to life and descends slowly but consistently until it reaches the bottom floor. The doors open to the security guard surrounded by a few cops and firemen.

'Are you okay?' one of the cops asks.

'Yeah, I'm fine,' I reply.

'Yes, sir. But I have a hankering for a good breakfast. Can you make any recommendations?'

After a brief chat with the cops, the gentleman begins to walk away. But he turns and calls, 'Sam, you want to join me?'

'No thanks,' I reply.

'Okay, well good getting to know you. And remember,' he said in a mock whisper, 'what happens in the elevator stays in the elevator.' He lets out an odd chuckle and exits.

I wait a few moments and walk out the front doors back into the murky morning wondering what to do next. After coming up with nothing, I sit on a wet bench and stare at the barren trees.

It's Personal: A Letter...

I had no ideas for the evening. Nothing particularly interesting happened today. The dogs haven't done anything noteworthy. Nor have the cats. I finally submitted my application to Seattle University for the MBA program, but that doesn't take much space to say. Pittsburgh beat Denver. I don't care overly much. And I don't have any idea what's wrong with the Jints. I wish I knew. Yeah, really nothing.

And then I decided to look back through my journals. I began in 1998. But for the first year, I didn't keep good track of dates. I found nothing of note in November of 1999, a time that I'd rather forget in any case. But then I looked through the white binder that held my thoughts from the year 2000. I came across a letter I had written. But to give you some flavor, I will first sample from a paper I wrote for Fr. Connor's Introduction to the Spiritual Life in May 2001.

'During February of 2000, the seminarians from Hartford discovered that they were going to Rome for the Jubilee year. All of us were ecstatic.. We could not believe the Archdiocese would pay for such an expense. In any case, we began to prepare for the trip. We looked through some Italian phrase books; we analyzed maps so that we would know our way through the city.

'I was more than excited because this would mean my first trip overseas. In addition, the vocation director hinted at the fact that we might be able to have a private audience with the Pope. Generally, I do not become excited at the mention of celebrities. But the Pope is so much more than a celebrity. And this Pope, specifically, has become a personal hero for me. I began to listen to the Pope's rendition of the Pater Noster each morning as I readied myself for work and school. In addition, I began to read books written by and about him. I wanted to know as much as I could about the man whom I was going to meet.

'The date of our pilgrimage came, and we traveled to the Eternal City on November 6th. We attended the papal audience the next day, but no one had mentioned the private audience. I became worried and started talking to my brother seminarians. We finally asked the priests, and they responded with blank stares. No one had arranged for a meeting with His Holiness. I did not give up - nor did my brothers. We had heard that we could deliver a hand-written note to the Swiss Guard at 6 a.m. in which we could request a private audience.'

And so I personally wrote the following letter on November 7, 2000:

'Dear Father Dziwisz, (Pope John Paul's secretary)

The seminarians of the Archdiocese of Hartford request a private audience with His Holiness Pope John Paul II as part of our pilgrimage during this, the Holy Jubilee Year of 2000. We shall be in the Eternal City until Friday evening, and we feel that this private audience would enrich our respective vocations. In our ranks, we have two men who will be ordained to the priesthood in May as well as another who is preparing for his ordination to the diaconate in January. In addition, 15 others are in theology, pre-theology, and college. Please contact Robert _____ in Rm 367 of the Quality Hotel Regent on the Via Filippo Civinni, 46 (Pavioli) 00197 Roma.

We thank you for your time and we pray that we may have the opportunity to meet the Beloved Vicar of Christ.'

We gave it to one of the Swiss Guard at 6 a.m. on the morning of 11/8. I give to you the remainder of the paper written in May 2001.

'Alas, we never received the call. Fate had dashed my dreams. I knew that I should have been happy about seeing him at all. I knew that this pilgrimage was itself a gift from God. I knew that I was celebrating the Jubilee Year of 2000 in the birthplace of Roman Catholicism. But none of these reasonable truths kept me from the disappointment that I felt. I wanted so badly to meet the Pope.'

Yes, I was disappointed. But the final paragraph of that paper revealed that there are always silver linings.

'Meanwhile, I struggle onward. As I reach the end of my first year in the seminary I know that I have a long way to go in my formation. I still need to be less prideful. I still need to listen better. I still need to pray more fervently. I still need to control my appetites. While I progress, however, I can take comfort in at least one thing. A good source has informed me that the Pope reads all letters that people write requesting private audiences. If this is true, the Pope has read a letter written by my hand. And, because our names were on that sheet, the Pope is praying for us. I can imagine no better person... except perhaps my grandmother.'

Nine years ago. And I still consider Pope John Paul II a hero. And I can still imagine no better person praying for me than my grandmother...

Sporting Rants & Raves: November 7, 2009

Happy Birthday
Happy 71st birthday to Mr. Jim Kaat, a former baseball player and 7-time Emmy winning broadcaster. Kaat boasts the third longest pitching career in Major League History having pitched from 1959-1983. During that span, he played for the Washington Senators / Minnesota Twins, Chicago White Sox, Philadelphia Phillies, New York Yankees, and St. Louis Cardinals.

Trivia of the Week
Jim Kaat played for 25 seasons in the Majors. Who are the only 2 pitchers that had longer tenures? Extra Credit: What were their respective tenures in MLB?

Answers to October 31's Trivia of the Week
Saban is considered part of this man's coaching tree. Bill Belichick
Extra Credit: For which two NFL teams did Saban act as Defensive Back coach and Defensive Coordinator respectively? Houston Oilers and Cleveland Browns

The Best Team Wins
For anyone who doesn't already know - which excludes everyone who reads this blog - the New York Yankees have officially won their 27th World Series. Their first in the New Yankee Stadium - rather appropriate - and my guess is the last for the foursome of Jeter, Rivera, Pettitte, and Posada as team members. An odd stat... Every time the Yankees have won since 1961 (9 of 27 times), a Democrat has been in the White House. A little more analysis shows that 20 of their 27 WS wins come in years when a Democrat was in the White House, leaving just 7 of those with Republicans. Interesting...

The Best Team Wins II
Did something today I haven't done in a while. I went to see a Pee Wee football game to watch a kid I've tutored. It was the championship game between the Bulldogs of Richmond (though not exactly sure where 'Richmond' is in these parts) and the Knights of Ballard. The 2 teams had battled earlier in the year to a 7-7 tie, making them undefeated coming into the game. The Knights scored first on a long run from their tailback. But they could not convert on the extra point. 6-0. The Bulldogs roared back with a drive of their own before the half making it 6-6. It seemed the Dogs would score before the half, but they were stopped on 4 straight downs inside the 5. Come the second half, it was all Bulldogs. Their offense scored again. And the defense kept the Knight off the field. Final score: Bulldogs 13 - Knights 7. The right team won...

Upset Alert - NCAA Football
Northwestern takes down Iowa. Yeah, I know, Iowa lost its QB. But don't tell me that a team gets to #8 based on its QB alone. And if that's true, well, see ya later Hawkeyes. Northwestern 17 - Iowa 10.

Stanford beats Oregon. No defense in this one as they scored 93 points between them. Stanford 51 - Oregon 42.

I suppose it's worth mentioning that Ohio State beat Penn State today, though at 15 and 11 respectively, I can't consider this as much an upset as some of the others. Then again, given the 17 point difference, perhaps it is. Ohio St 24 - Penn St 7.

And the biggest travesty of the day? Navy sinks Notre Dame. Again. I don't mean to jump on any bandwagons, but see ya later, Charlie. Navy 23 - Notre Dame 21.

TD's NFL Picks - Week 9
Keeping it short and sweet this week. Gotta clean house.

Washington @ Atlanta
The Redskins are terrible. Zorn should not even be in the vicinity not to call plays. And then there are the Falcons who are still annoyed that they lost to a beatable Saints team. TD chooses: Atlanta Falcons

Green Bay @ Tampa Bay
Have you heard? In the battle of the Bays, Tampa has decided to don their throwbacks. My first thought was, 'Oh God, really?' My second thought was, 'It makes sense this year at 0-7'. TD chooses: Green Bay Packers

Miami @ New England
Miami blew out the Patriots in their last game last year. But last year is not a good indication of this year's reality. Methinks Brady, Moss, and Welker will tame the WildKat. TD chooses: New England Patriots

Kansas City @ Jacksonville
In this battle of the bad, you have in one corner a Jags team that I saw mutilated by the Seattle Seahawks who were themselves mutilated by the Arizona Cardinals. Yeah, not so good. And in the other corner you have a once proud franchise that has dwindled to the point of obsolescence and ridiculousness (see Larry Johnson). Who wins? I'll put my money on Maurice. TD chooses: Jacksonville Jaguars

Houston @ Indianapolis
Could be a shootout, but whenever I say something like that, it never seems to come to fruition. So I won't say it. Instead, I'll say that Peyton's having a great year and generally does well against division foes. TD chooses: Indianapolis Colts

Baltimore @ Cincinnati
Close to a game of the week. It's a must win for the Ravens. It's a more than nice-to-have for the Bagels. Cincy comes off a bye. Baltimore comes off a good win against the Broncos. I think the Ravens have the momentum. But I'm concerned about choosing against the Bagels. Eh, well, I'll make this about my alma mater. Go Blue Hens. TD chooses: Baltimore Ravens

Arizona @ Chicago
It's about that time of year when Chicago starts to get a tad bit nippy. And Arizona ain't about nippy. Generally. But Arizona has actually been better away from home this year. The better team? TD chooses: Arizona Cardinals

Carolina @ New Orleans
Don't underestimate John Fox. Sean Payton won't. TD chooses: New Orleans Saints

Detroit @ Seattle
Everyone around here has this expectation that the Seachickens will destroy the Lions. I personally don't think so, especially if Calvin Johnson is in the lineup. Still, Qwest Field can be intimidating with the 12th man. TD chooses: Seattle Seahawks

San Diego @ New York Giants
You know what I think happened to the New York Giant Defense these past three weeks? Good teams and no Spags. Well, they better get their heads out of their hind parts and start playing like they've been there. Will they in this game? Something tells me they will. TD chooses: New York Football Giants

Tennessee @ San Francisco
Two weeks ago and this is San Fran by far. Now, I'm not so sure. Can Vince Young make that much of a difference? Yes, but not because of his talent. Rather it's because teams haven't seen him recently - he's somewhat of an unknown - and he gives the offense - an offense I don't think is bad - a spark. Still, San Fran has done well under Singletary and can win this game. In fact I think they will win this game. TD chooses: San Francisco 49ers

Dallas @ Philadelphia
Great Sunday Night Game. I wish it weren't for the lead in the NFC East, but I can't complain overly much given the Jints rancid play. Romo does well in the regular season. But it seems Philly will have all of its offensive weapons for the game. I don't put it past them to pull it out against the Cowboys at home. TD chooses: Philadelphia Eagles

Pittsburgh @ Denver
And a great Monday Night Game. Go figure. Denver's licking its wounds; and it better figure out how to reduce the exposure many thought were coming in the Baltimore game. I think Pittsburgh will find a way to disrupt the O-line and Orton as the Ravens did. I know, Denver deserves respect. But watch out for the Steelers. TD chooses: Pittsburgh Steelers

And there you have it. Another week of rants and raves. Until next I write, happy sporting...

3WW (Karma, Obey, Wither): Haiku

Haven't written haiku in some time. Taking a break from the story at least for a week...

The green grapes wither;
They obey the sun’s red heat.
Raisins as karma.

They wish they'd wither,
fall to karma's losing curse.
Yankees don't obey.

It's Personal: A Different Kind of Adventure

I'm not particularly adventurous. In fact, I'm rather risk averse. Yes, I took off across the country in a half-packed Mitsubishi Galant unsure where I might land. But I still haven't been out of the state in which I now live - apart from flying home - more than thrice. Okay, I once purchased part of a horse named White Tex in an internet venture when I was in college; the horse broke its leg. But I've never played the lottery. And I've been to the casino twice in my life and have spent maybe about $20.

And when I tell you what I think my greatest adventure thus far has been, you might think me a bit of a square. But I challenge you to attempt this adventure...

It was just after the winter vacation of my second year in the seminary. The pre-Theologians (those who have not yet attained a philosophy degree and can therefore not attend theology classes or wear a collar) were at what I seem to remember was St. Williams Hall just up the road from the main seminary building. We were there for a retreat.

Tangent: I loved retreats when I was in the seminary. A time to reflect and read. A time to sleep and relax. A time to center one's self. We had retreats immediately before every winter/spring semester in the seminary. And during the summer with the Archdiocese.

It was an Ignatian Retreat.

Tangent: Ignatius of Loyola was founder of the Society of Jesus otherwise known as the Jesuits. His Spiritual Exercises (composed 1522-1524) are well known throughout the Church.

We followed the prayers, meditations, and mental exercises of the Exercises. Though meant for approximately 1 month, the priest in charge of the retreat condensed them into 2 weeks.

Where's the adventure, you might ask?

The priest suggested that we seminarians might try a silent retreat.

And I took him up on the offer.

For 2 weeks, I spoke only at mass and with my spiritual advisor. I slept some. I read a lot. I prayed even more. What was most interesting? I still communicated with everyone in the building. Not with my voice but with my hands. And my eyes. With my actions and facial expressions.

Those 2 weeks stick in my memory as the most profound in my life. And in some ways, the most adventurous. Because I journeyed not across a nation or even into the unknown but rather into the depths of myself.

Sporting Rants and Raves: October 31, 2009

Happy 58th Birthday to Mr. Nick Saban, widely considered a trickster to many in the NFL and a treat to LSU and Alabama. A one-time head coach of the Miami Dolphins (2005-06), he claimed on 12/21/2006 'I'm not going to be Alabama's coach.' And then on 1/3/2007, he accepted the Alabama offer. But it's difficult to argue with his success in the college ranks at 118-50-1.

Trivia of the Week
Saban is considered part of this man's coaching tree. Extra Credit: For which two NFL teams did Saban act as Defensive Back coach and Defensive Coordinator respectively?

Answers to October 24's Trivia of the Week
Y.A. Tittle was the first of 7 quarterbacks to achieve consecutive 30-touchdown passing seasons. Name 4 of the remaining 6. Steve Bartkowski, Brett Favre, Dan Fouts, Dan Marino, Peyton Manning, and Jeff Garcia

Game 3 of World Series delayed by rain
Waiting. The pitcher responsible for closing out the Angels in the ALCS is waiting for his first post-season start in Philly. The fans are waiting to see if some of the sluggers come alive in game 3. The Yanks are waiting to see if they can rise to the top yet again. The Phillies are waiting to see if they can knock off a fabled franchise. We're all just waiting...

Rutgers stuns UConn 28-24 in final seconds
Alas, the Huskies drop another. An irony of ironies, it came at the hands of one of Darren Jasper's best friends from Miami, Mr. Tim Brown. No, not that Tim Brown. Rutger's Tim Brown who caught the go-ahead pass with 22 seconds remaining in the 4th quarter.

Upset Alert - NCAA Football
Mississippi (24) started with a 7-0 lead. Then it was 7-3. But in the second quarter, the Tigers scored their first TD. And they didn't relinquish that lead. Auburn 33 - Mississippi 20.

UNC pulls it out against Virginia Tech (14) with a field goal on the final play in the 4th. UNC 20 - VA Tech 17.

In the Big East, South Florida slowed West Virginia (20) with a convincing victory. S Florida 30 - West Virginia 19.

TD's NFL Picks - Week 8
Okay, let's do this one rapid fire. I'm sitting squarely at 57% accuracy, which is where I sat last year after the playoffs. Let's see if I can change that for the better...

Denver @ Baltimore
Good game in Baltimore tomorrow. Denver brings an undefeated record. Baltimore's looking to tarnish it. The Ravens have the defense. They even have the offense. But they're just not on the right page. TD chooses: Denver Broncos

St. Louis @ Detroit
Wah, wah, waaah... Or ho hum, if you'd like. TD chooses: Detroit Lions

Seattle @ Dallas
That was a pretty convincing win for the Cowboys coming out of the bye against Atlanta. And that was a terrible loss to the Cardinals two weeks ago for the Hawks. Add to that the loss of Jones and Tatupu, and I think we have ourselves a whoopin of Seattle. TD chooses: Dallas Cowboys

Cleveland @ Chicago
I'm thinking Cleveland should plead no contest. And they deserve it based on their latest choice for coach. TD chooses: Chicago Bears

Houston @ Buffalo
A fascinating game, even if I don't care particularly much. Andre Johnson, injured. Trent Edwards, ineffective. Matt Schaub, not too shabby. Owen Daniels, catching TDs right and left. Buffalo's won 2 straight. So has Houston. I'd say Houston's wins are more impressive. And even though Johnson will be out, TD still chooses: Houston Texans

Minnesota @ Green Bay
Some would argue that this is the game of the week. Divisional rivals. Favre returns. So tired of Favre. And I've officially gone from indifferent to dislike when it comes to the Minnesota Vikings. Don't have a good reason for it. Just a gut feel. I suggest the Packers take some notes from that Pittsburgh game. But I don't think it will help all that much. TD chooses: Minnesota Vikings

Miami @ New York Jets
Didn't we just do this tango in Miami? Can the Jets renew their winning ways, even if it was only Oakland? Can the Dolphins swim past a struggling Sanchez? I'm betting on the latter. The swimming - well, what else do Dolphins do anyway? TD chooses: Miami Dolphins

San Francisco @ Indianapolis
I know San Fran's a good team, but I expect Manning will make them look pedestrian at best. They need Singletary in his prime to compete. And even then, I don't think it would make much of a difference. TD chooses: Indianapolis Colts

Jacksonville @ Tennessee
Young will start, but I'm not convinced that will mean a win. Too many problems in the land of the Volunteers. Jacksonville has the added bonus of coming off a bye, although I'm not particularly impressed with the 41-0 blowout and the too close win against the Rams. Eh, TD chooses: Jacksonville Jaguars

Oakland @ San Diego
The Raiders gave the Bolts a run for their money in the first game of the season. It even lead me to suggest that the Raiders could be on the road to recovery. But, no. They aren't. Instead, I think we'll see San Diego lambaste the silver and black. TD chooses: San Diego Chargers

Carolina @ Arizona
Could it be that the Cardinals are coming alive again? And not just their O but their D too. Carolina, meanwhile, is up and down. Up against poor teams. Down against mediocre to good teams. So much for parity. TD chooses: Arizona Cardinals

New York Giants @ Philadelphia
Well, Philly should be an interesting place tomorrow. Game 4 of the series and this game all in the same rather unimpressive urban space. And Philly will play New York in both games. What will be the outcome of the Series? Well, now at 3-0, I'm a bit concerned about the Yanks. I'm not as concerned about the Jints. I think they can pull it off. TD chooses: New York Football Giants

New Orleans @ Atlanta
I wish Atlanta had pulled that game off against Dallas. But alas, no. So, now we see divisional rivals going against each other in a rather important game for both teams. I think New Orleans has the big mo at this moment. TD chooses: New Orleans Saints

There ya have it. The game's now 3-2 and going strong. Please remember that there is no Sunday night football game tomorrow. And that you need to put your clocks back an hour this evening. Until next I write, happy sporting...

3WW (Incubate, Nightmare, Vanity): Dog Days

Disclaimer: This story is a work of fiction. No characters are based on real people, whether living or dead. Any resemblance to a real person is pure coincidence.

St. Paul says that it's when you're weakest that you're strongest. Or something like that. I'm not really religious, but that line has stuck with me since the night when I realized it was true.

It was late 2008. Sometime in October. I had just broken up with my boyfriend - and the father of my two kids - because I found out he was cheating. It was the second time with the same woman. Hell no, I said to him when he came looking to make up. I kicked his ass out of my life.

A few weeks later I got called to a meeting at work. At four on a Friday. You see where this is going. They told me they were downsizing. Laying me off. I'd worked there as an admin for like seven years, and they laid me off. They made sure to tell me I wasn't fired. So I could get unemployment. Thanks for not firing me, I told them.

I knew my benefits were going to run out so I made appointments for me and my kids to go to the doctor and dentist. Since I knew I couldn't pay for insurance and food too. And I had no idea when I would get another job. The kids were fine. But I wasn't. I found out I had AIDS. The doctor started talking about incubation periods and cocktails, but all I could think about was how I was going to kill that lying, cheating asshole who gave it to me.

I didn't kill him. But I thought about it. Loosening the lug nuts on his tires. Just doing one of those murder suicides. But I love my kids too much to do something like that.

I found out about that on a Wednesday. And so, I asked my mom to take the kids over the weekend so I could 'go out with friends'. I don't think she believe me, but she didn't push either. I dropped the kids off on Friday night and went back to the house that I couldn't afford. The mail had another eviction notice that I wasn't going to answer.

I went up to the bathroom and looked in the vanity mirror. I had big circles under my eyes; I couldn't even tell who it was looking back at me. It was all a nightmare. A never ending nightmare that I couldn't control. They say God doesn't give you any more than you can handle. Not what you think you can handle. But what you can handle. Well, I didn't think I could handle anything else.

Then I heard something downstairs. It sounded like scratching at the front door. Not normal. So, I went down to see what was up. I looked out the window and saw a couple guys with masks on. And it wasn't Halloween. Figures, I thought. Yeah, I didn't really react too badly. Just said 'figures' to myself. And thought about what I was going to do next. I had two thoughts. Let them come in and do whatever. Maybe kill me. Or rape me. Or just beat the hell out of me.

Then I thought, no, that's not who I am. I wasn't going to give up. Because I had worked too damn hard to be a good mom and a good person. And that's when it came to me. I have no idea where it came from, but I heard myself bark. Bark like that old freakin Rottweiler that lived next to us and that killed all the neighborhood cats. I barked again. Then I got on all fours and kept barking. And jumping up and down. And scratching at the door. I just let loose and did that for a good three or four minutes.

When I got up and looked out the window, there was no one there. No ski masks. No scratching. Nothing.

I went to the kitchen table and sat down. Took a pad and a pen and started writing. After about an hour of thinking and writing, I had my plan of attack. For getting a job. For going to school for nursing. For the man I wanted. For the house I wanted. And the car. And the college education for my kids. I just wrote it all down. And there it was.

Now, I have a job with good insurance. I'm going to school. I'm saving money. I live in an apartment with my kids. And I'm making it. All because out of nowhere I just started barking like a dog.

It's Personal: You Decide... St. Bridget's

It was the feast of St. Pius X. August 21, 2000. I was nearing the end of my time at St. Bridget's in Cheshire. A summer internship, if you will, before entering the seminary. The pastor, a priest for whom my uncles had been altar boys in West Haven, was a smart and happy man of Irish stock who ruled his roost absolutely and effectively. That's why it was such an honor for him to allow me to give the homily at a 7:30 a.m. Monday mass. Although not practice the Catholic Church technically allows, the pastor believed that the only way an aspiring priest could be good at giving homilies was to give them. It made sense to me. By late August, I had already given my fair share of homilies to the small Monday congregation. I can't say many of the homilies were particularly good; I was actually very nervous in my alb in front of even those few people. But, on August 21st, I stepped to the pulpit and delivered what was probably the best homily I had given during my short tenure. In fact, I had more than one parishioner tell me that it had brought them to tears. After the mass, a group of us went over to the small coffee shop across the street and enjoyed a cup of joe. The pastor and I then returned to the office to begin the day's work. The pastor immediately called me into his office and complimented me on the homily. I thanked him. Then, he smiled a big grin and said, 'But you do know that you just gave a homily about St. Rose of Lima and that today is the feast of St. Pius X. Don't worry, your secret's safe with me...'

I returned to St. Bridget's for Christmas in 2000 at the pastor's request. And because I felt that St. Bridget's felt more like my own parish at the time. The pastor welcomed me and grilled me about all the happenings at the seminary. He wanted to know which priests visited. And what I was learning. What I'd seen in Boston. And what I'd learned thus far. He then told me that he needed someone to help him at the Christmas masses, especially the Midnight Mass, which for whatever reason is not really at midnight in most parishes but at 10. I was, of course, more than happy to oblige. And so, we readied ourselves for the very special mass. The pastor wanted me to be the thurifer. In other words, the guy that holds the thurible. Okay, so the guy that swings the holy smoke. That help? I had acquired the knack at the seminary. A clean swing - like a pendulum - using a little wrist action in the right hand. So, we got the smoke smoking for the entrance and then I put the thurible aside. Well, it soon came time to add more incense to the thurible. The one problem was that I didn't know how it opened. The ones with which I was accustomed at the seminary had a piece on top that you could grab and lift. This one had no such piece. And I had no idea how to open it. So, I did the only thing I could at that moment. I lifted the metal with my bare fingers. For those of you who don't know, where there's smoke there's generally fire. And the embers in that thurible made touching the metal like touching a stove. I survived that first time. And then I had to do it again later in the mass. And then right before leaving. And no, I did not figure out how to life the lid - at least during the mass. The result? Fingertips that didn't heal for a month.

Sporting Rants and Raves: October 24, 2009

Happy 83rd Birthday to Mr. Yelberton Abraham Tittle, the Hall of Fame quarterback who played for the Baltimore Colts, San Francisco 49ers, and New York Football Giants. Although he never won an NFL Championship, he did get the G-men to the title game from 1961-1963. He retired in 1964 and now owns a California-based insurance company, which he started 40 years ago.

Trivia of the Week
Y.A. Tittle was the first of 7 quarterbacks to achieve consecutive 30-touchdown passing seasons. Name 4 of the remaining 6.

Answers to October 17's Trivia of the Week
In what year did Mr. Ernie Els win The Open Championship? 2002
Extra Credit: Which American golfer is tied for second most number of 'British Open' wins? Tom Watson How many did he win? 5 - 1975, 1977, 1980, 1982, 1983

Devine rallies No. 22 WVU past UConn 28-24
Since last I wrote the Sporting Rants and Raves column, a sad story has been reported across the country. A young man, a student and football player at the University of Connecticut, was killed at a party on the Storrs campus after the Louisville win. With one stab to Jasper Howard's stomach, another person took the 20-year old's life too soon. I hope they find the killer soon, as well as whomever is threatening potential witnesses - if not the killer himself. As for the game, UCONN played as inspired a game as they could have wished gaining 501 yards of total offense. Unfortunately, whether grieving or not, they simply could not overcome so many second half mistakes - a fumble, 3 interceptions, and 2 missed field goals. Still, they played. And as the sign in UCONN's visiting tunnel in West Virginia stated, today everyone's a Husky.

Game 6 of AL championship series postponed by rain
First, the umps have sucked. I'm a Yankees fan, tried and true. But Posada and Cano were both out at third. I acknowledge it. I couldn't believe it when I saw it. Yes, that ball was fair too. But all of you Yankee haters also have to agree that Swisher didn't go too early in that same game. In any case, here they are at 3-2. I think the Yanks can close em out in New York, but I'm not betting on anything. Not after 2004. Now we'll have to wait for tomorrow... Oh, P.S. Swisher, please get your head out of your...

TD's NFL Picks - Week 7
It's the seventh week. Terrible Monday Night game. There's a game in London. And my brain's mushed mulch from the GMAT. Onward, ho...

Chicago @ Cincinnati
I don't get the Bagels. Lost to Houston? Don't get me wrong, I think Houston is one of the best bad teams out there. It's because of Odom, I've heard. If so, then they're sunk cuz he ain't comin back. That would mean Chicago wins. Da Bears who have lost just about every linebacker they've had play this year. Ugh. Except that Benson wants revenge or something. This one ain't as easy as it didn't seem to be before I was going to choose. TD chooses: Chicago Bears

New England (kinda) @ Tampa
This is the London whopper. The venue is sold out; our brethren across the sea seem to enjoy the novelty value. Because that's all they're going to get from this one. Are they really trying to make the NFL popular in Europe, or is the league just tossing bones? TD chooses: New England Patriots

Indianapolis @ St. Louis
Story before the game: None. Story after the game: Colts 6-0. TD chooses: Indianapolis Colts

San Diego @ Kansas City
Easy, right? Chargers by a mile is my first instinct. And yet last year, they only beat the Chiefs by 1 point in each of their games. It's still a division game. And KC has the momentum after winning last week. I'm going to make a completely ridiculous pick. Remember, brain mush. TD chooses: Kansas City Chiefs

San Francisco @ Houston
Houston, we've fixed the problem. Yes, indeed. Their defense is actually playing the way everyone thought they might. Their offense too. San Fran, on the other hand, not so much even though they're still at the top of their division. I trust Singletary to get them back on track; having Gore in the lineup won't hurt either. But it'll be close. TD chooses: San Francisco 49ers

Green Bay @ Cleveland
The Seattle Seahawks have the 12th man. The Buffalo Bills have lake effect snow in the dead of winter. And the Green Bay Packers have the flu. No, they don't actually have the flu. Cleveland's players have the flu. But the Packers have the flu as an ally. Like the 12th man and... Oh, forget it. TD chooses: Green Bay Packers

Buffalo @ Carolina
Yes, Buffalo beat the Jets; please see 5 Sanchez INTs. Carolina won too, you know. Against Tampa, yes, I know. But how much better is Buffalo really? I think Carolina is still in the thick of the south, strangely. By the way, anyone know where T.O.'s home planet is? I think he finally returned there and left the human body on Earth. TD chooses: Carolina Panthers

New York Jets @ Oakland Raiders
Three weeks ago, this would have been a laughable game. Now, the Jets have sunk back into mediocrity, and the Raiders have a one-game winning streak after defeating the Iggles. This game honestly shouldn't be too difficult to decide. I think the Jets defense will decide it. And Sanchez may be handing off and / or throwing shorter passes come Sunday. TD chooses: New York Jets

Atlanta @ Dallas
A southern battle in the palace. Atlanta on a short week. Dallas on a short leash. Atlanta's the better team in 7 of 10 meetings. But there are those other 3. And when you combine that short week with Dallas' bye week, it seems like it could be one of those 3. But I don't want to choose Dallas. So, I won't. TD chooses: Atlanta Falcons

New Orleans @ Miami
Yes, I know. New Orleans beat the living snot out of the Jints last weekend. I've heard the condolences all week. Now New France goes to Miami to see if they can handle a Wildcat offense. And to see if Drew remains as hot as a Miami breeze. I think Miami can be competitive in this game. But the Saints are just too hot right now. TD chooses: New Orleans Saints with a warning. Beware peaking too soon in the season.

Arizona @ New York Giants
I'm almost glad I didn't see the game last weekend. A big game and what do the Jints do? Roll over. Why? Because they have a bunch of injuries in the defensive backfield and because they weren't at all disciplined. If that's the case, then they're potentially in BIG trouble this week, because Warner has the ability to pick apart the Giants defense. Of course, that always depends on which Cardinals team shows up. The one from the first half of last year's Super Bowl? Or the one from the second? I think the Jints are reeling right now. TD chooses: Arizona Cardinals

Philadelphia @ Washington
How is it that one of the biggest clunkers is on Monday Night this week? Yes, I know it's about NFC East rivals meeting on the big stage. But I don't want to see Washington play terribly. I also don't want to see a team that lost to the Raiders. I may very well not even watch the game. Still, I have to choose. TD chooses: Philadelphia Eagles

Game of the Week
Minnesota @ Pittsburgh
Again, one of the best games of the week - or at least it's expected to be - is on at 10 a.m. when I go to church. Oh well. The family will have to give me an update when I get out. Right, the game itself. Minnesota at 6-0 showed a few chinks in the armor last week. At least their defense did. You better believe that Tomlin's grinning a bit - he was their defensive coordinator once upon a time - and he's preparing the Pittsburgh offense to bombard that D. But what about the Pittsburgh D against the Minnesota O? That's the real question mark. This could very well be a shoot out. Then again, it could be exceptionally low scoring. I don't think it'll be a blow out either way. Tough one. TD chooses: Pittsburgh Steelers

And there you have it sports fans. By this time next week, we'll be smack dab in the middle of the Fall Classic. See you then. Until next I write, happy sporting...
